Skincare Layering 101: The Order That Actually Matters

July 28, 2026

A ten-step routine will not out-perform a four-step one if the order is wrong. What matters is letting each formula reach the skin at the right moment — water-based steps first, oils and occlusives last.

Start with a clean, damp face

Toner or essence on damp skin gives every water-based step after it something to bind to. If your face is bone dry by the time the serum lands, you have already lost most of the hydration you were aiming for.

The working order

  • Cleanser — oil first if you wear sunscreen or makeup, then a gentle gel.
  • Toner or essence — hydration, applied to damp skin.
  • Treatment serum — one active per session, not three.
  • Moisturiser — seals the water-based steps in.
  • Sunscreen — every morning, the last step before makeup.

One active at a time

Retinol on Monday, exfoliating acid on Wednesday, vitamin C on the mornings in between. Stacking them in a single sitting is the fastest route to a compromised barrier — and a barrier takes weeks to rebuild.
